To celebrate our most recent ebook, “Breaking Up: The Start Of Something Great,” we wanted to share three things we learned about breakups from movies that apply to business breakups as well:
When the shark’s not moving forward, it’s dead.
Whether you’re ending a business or personal relationship, what Annie Hall taught us about love is that when the shark’s not moving forward, it dies. Do you have dead shark on your hands? Check out the recent TSC ebook Dear John for letters on how to put it to rest.
Breakups can renew your commitment to high standards.
Who didn’t feel Rob Gordon’s pain while he was putting back the pieces of his life after his breakup with Laura? Aside from giving John Cusack yet another reason to stand outside in the rain with no sign of a raincoat or umbrella nearby, High Fidelity taught us how to make a mixtape to get us through the pain:
“The making of a great compilation tape, like breaking up, is hard to do and takes ages longer than it might seem. You gotta kick off with a killer, to grab attention. Then you got to take it up a notch, but you don’t wanna blow your wad, so then you got to cool it off a notch. There are a lot of rules.”
More than anything, Cusack has high standards for music, and through his breakup, he pushed through grief by pushing himself to make a killer mixtape.
A business breakup can mean the same — take the opportunity to renew your commitment to high standards you may have let slip. Take the opportunity to think about what you really want. Then find an advertising agency that can live up to your new, heightened standards. (Hint, give us a call).
Pick up the pieces and hit the ground running.
We’ve all made Bridget Jones-style resolutions after a breakup. Similarly, when you break up with your advertising agency, you need to pick up the pieces (after suitable time for grieving has passed) and put the pedal to the metal. When your grieving time has passed for your agency, you give us a call. We will help you get back in fighting shape and out in front of the market sooner than you think.
Let’s change B2B marketing forever, together.
