’Tis the Season for Eggnog

eggnog

For my wife and me, the holiday season has many rituals: decorating double Christmas trees, baking sugar cookies, spending time with family and friends, and drinking copious amounts of spiked eggnog. Yes, eggnog.

Love it or hate it, making and drinking eggnog is a holiday tradition firmly embedded in American culture. It conjures up memories of Yule logs, cheese logs and tacky sweaters. It makes cranky and insufferable relatives tolerable. It turns casseroles and dry turkey into edible fare. Oh, behold the powers of eggnog.

I must admit that nothing puts me in better holiday spirits (pun intended) like several glasses of high-octane eggnog. In fact, I love eggnog so much, I though I might share my recipe with you in time for the holidays.

My high-octane eggnog recipe goes a little something like this:

Ingredients

1 cup Pennsylvania Dutch Egg Nog (it’s 29.5 proof)

2 shots Sailor Jerry’s Spiced Rum (it’s 92 proof)

2 dashes ground cinnamon

2 dashes ground nutmeg

Ice

Equipment

Martini shaker

Highball glass or tumbler

Instructions

  1. Place all of the ingredients in a martini shaker.
  2. Shake for one or two minutes.
  3. Serve in a highball glass or tumbler over ice.
  4. Repeat the process until you get a warm, tingling feeling in your body and your lips are numb.

True, eggnog is not for everybody. But that is usually because they have never had good eggnog. My recipe has converted many non-eggnog drinkers into cab rides home. I hope you’ll try my recipe out. And if you do, I hope you enjoy it responsibly. Happy holidays and safe travels.
