Craig the Intern Talks About Learning Management Systems

2858080_HiResMy first week waiting tables was certainly not my best. I only started getting the hang of it after I shadowed some more-experienced servers. I learned the ropes — from tricks and timesaving habits they had learned — by watching the servers and then applying that knowledge to my own work.

Side note: Tip your server generously, because their job is not easy.

From waiting tables to managing a company, successful training saves time and money. It makes employees much more valuable than before, too.

A learning management system, or LMS, specializes in, well, learning. LMSs offer software or service solutions that can organize and more effectively communicate your training and learning materials throughout a company.

Say you have a big company with a lot of employees. You probably have a lot of learning and training materials. LMSs can help automate, organize and centralize mountains of information to effectively and efficiently get from point A to point B.

Today, training can be streamlined in a much easier way than ever before. You can really get a solid bang for your buck and save time with an effective LMS. Some of the most common services that an LMS will include are:

  • Online learning
  • Instructor-led training
  • Mobile solutions
  • Consulting
  • Social learning
  • Leadership learning
  • Metrics to track learning progress

Depending on what the company offers, onboarding time and turnover can be decreased, and ROI can be increased.

Learning management systems are often just one slice of the pie when it comes to what companies offer. More specifically, LMSs are frequently a segment of talent management, which can help you track employees’ progress from an even wider scope.

Some companies to look at were listed by HRO Today’s Baker’s Dozen for learning management systems, and some I found on my own:

I will admit that I found learning about this branch of HR slightly more complex than some of the others (ironic, right?). That being said, what did I miss? What did I get right?
